A large woodland, Balls Wood is a tapestry of varied species including a number of ancient woodland species.
One of the most striking features of the wood are the open and sunny rides, which abound with butterflies, birds and wildflowers. When the wood was first bought by the Trust, only 20% of these rides were 20 metres wide, extensive work widening the rides has meant that now 80% of the rides are wide and full of sunlight and the wildlife has thrived as a result.
The wood has two waymarked walks, the hornbeam trail and the white admiral trail, designed to guide you through the best parts of the wood.
Hobby Horse Wood is very close to Balls Wood and has a fantastic display of Wood Anemones in the spring.
