Chalk Carving and Cordage Activity

1st March 2025
Chalk carving was an important prehistoric art form, reflected in findings such as the ‘Burton Agnes drum’ often with intricate carvings of symbols and beliefs from the era that Stonehenge was constructed. Chalk carving is a practice of shaping chalk using simple tools to sculpt an object or feature in the landscape. Nettle fibres are really strong and even stronger when made into cordage, learn how to prepare the nettle stems and combine the fibres through rolling or plaiting. Have a go at ancient arts under the expert supervision of flint knapper and primitive artist Josh Bluemore. Suitable for ages 6+.
