With half term just around the corner (29th May-2nd June), we thought we’d bring you some of the top things to see and do throughout the county to keep the house clear of any cries of “I’m bored!”. From overnight stays at family run farms, to wizarding wonders and behind the scenes magic, we’ve got everything you could need right here on your doorstep. So read on and discover where this half term will take you and the family…

Overnight stays at Home Farm Glamping

27th May-8th June

With a stellar line up of events, Home Farm Glamping are beating the boredom and bringing you and the family some amazing breaks this half term. Set in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, stay the night in your very own bell tent, experiencing the outdoors in all its glory before settling back for the night into pure cosiness (now this is what dreams are made of!). With Giant Tree Climbing on 27th May and a Rainbow Fairy Show from Tiny Tim’s Theatre on the 2nd June, you’re in for a treat when you stay at Home Farm Glamping.  

Crafts and fairs in Stevenage

For a day of mooching and browsing some handcrafted goodies, head along to the Love your Local Market in Stevenage on Saturday 27th May. Treat yourself and the kids to a day of crafting fun, tasty food and drink, and a great atmosphere. For even more taste bud delights, end your half term with a bang as the Street Food Heroes make their return to the town on 4th June. Head along to the Event Island where you’ll find a host of food stalls, all offering delicious treats for you and the family to enjoy.  

Local produce in Welwyn Garden City

Looking for more farmers market delights? On Saturday 3rd June, Welwyn Garden City will be hosting their Food & Craft Market, where you can join in on the celebration of locally produced, lovingly made food, drink, and art. Sit back and enjoy the culinary delights, or get hands on with cooking workshops from Community Chef, who’ll be sharing their foodie expertise with cooking demos using local produce.

Foodie dreams in Welwyn

For all you foodie families out there, Welwyn is the place to be this half term. Choose from three restaurants with AA Rosettes throughout the village to dine at, including The White Hart, The Wellington, and Auberge du Lac. Go for a walk around local nature reserve Danewsbury Park and be sure to check out the Welwyn Roman Baths, set in the Mill Green Museum on the River Lea. There, you’ll find a working and restored 18th century watermill, ample information on the local area, and a warm welcome. Who says the learning has to stop when you’re not at school!?

Happy days in Hatfield

Re-opening its doors on 1st June, now is the perfect time to visit Hatfield House, taking in its full glory as you walk through the gardens (open year-round) and into the stunning Jacobean house. The kids will never forget their day out at this magical house right on your doorstep, so take the day out and make memories to last a lifetime! For a bite to eat, enjoy the 10-minute walk down to The Eight Bells, where you can enjoy an afternoon lunch and drink in this beautiful building.

Verulamium Museum

Join in on the fun at the Verulamium Museum, who will be hosting fun-filled events this May half term. From flower crown making at Crafts in the Colonnade, to a Mosaic Making Workshop, to an Iron Age Gallery Talk, the fun never stops at St Albans’ very own portal into the life of Roman Britain.  

Treasure Map Trails

Explore your local area in the best way possible, donning your adventure hat for the day and heading out with Treasure Map Trails! With maps across seven parts of Hertfordshire, you and the kids can spend the day discovering those places you never knew existed, the spots you’ve always been curious about, and those local haunts that are waiting to be seen in a brand-new light.  

Tring Natural History Museum

Calling all explorers! The Natural History Museum in Tring is waiting with its doors open, ready to show you some fantastic educational and fun days out with events like Tactile Explorers, Camouflage Creatures, Bioblitz, and The Man and the Museum Tour. Once you’ve had your adventure in the museum, head across the road to Tring Park, where you can spend the afternoon strolling through the beautiful outdoors.

Paradise Wildlife Park

Make the little ones’ day and book in your trip to Paradise Wildlife Park, home to many wonderful wild animals. Get up close with tigers, pandas, lemurs, and many more furry friends on your day trip to the park. On the 27th -28th May, come along to the special Otter Weekend, celebrating these lovely mammals as they enter their new home at Paradise.

Stanborough Park

Get into the summer spirit this year with a visit to Splashlands, Stanborough Park’s very own splash park. Enjoy the day as you paddle, splash, and dive through the park’s giant pirate ship, 67 water jets, and great play area. Pack the trunks and pop on the goggles, it’s Splashlands time!

St Albans Cathedral

Climb the 211 steps up Britain’s oldest Cathedral tower at St Albans Cathedral. In one of their fantastic Tower Tours, get ready to see St Albans like never before, witnessing breath taking views once you get to the top. On your way up, see the Rose Window, roof spaces, and ringing bells, before heading out onto the roof of the tower (just don’t look down!). Make your way back down the tower and stroll over to Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, where you can enjoy a refreshing drink and a sit down after all those steps!

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter

There’s no place quite like the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, nestled right here in the beautiful Herts countryside. This truly is an unforgettable day out, where you can witness the magic that went into making the on-screen world of Hogwarts and beyond. Treat the family to this behind the scenes preview of one of the most beloved stories ever told, and see just how much love and work went into its creation.

Henry Moore Studios & Gardens

For those of you with older kids with a penchant for the arts, the Henry Moore Studios and Gardens should be on the top of your list for days out this half term. Set within a magnificent 70-acre estate, you can spend the day exploring the world-renowned artist’s former home, studios, and gardens. What are you waiting for – grab those berets and get artsy!

Atria Watford

Atria Watford will be get creative this half term with a free five-day crafting event that's perfect for little artists. Located in the atrium, this event celebrates the great outdoors with a different outdoor craft to be made every day, from windchimes to bird boxes. Once the kids are crafted out, we recommend grabbing a bite from the likes of TGIs or Pizza Express.  

The Camping and Caravanning Club

If you’re looking for some staycation inspiration, why not get outdoorsy and camp overnight in the Herts countryside? The Camping and Caravanning Club have some magnificent spots across the county, each offering all the facilities and amenities that you need for a camping adventure!

Tewinbury Farm

We couldn’t make a list of places to spend your half term without including Tewinbury Farm, a venue, farm, cookery school and hotel, all in one. Across your week off, Tewinbury will be hosting an Acoustic Night on the 26th May, an Amy Winehouse Tribute Night on the 2nd June, and a live performance from solo, soulful singer Ed Tatterstall on the 3rd June. Come along, enjoy the great atmosphere, and unwind into the evening with family and friends.

Chiltern Canal Boat Holidays

Get the whole family involved as you sail along this holiday with Chiltern Canal Boats, setting off on the Grand Union Canal and learning to navigate your own boat! Once you’ve got the hang of the water and everything is smooth sailing, sit back and relax as you wind through the beautiful outdoors. This is an overnight stay like none other, so book in your family stay (and even bring along your four-legged friends!).

Ashridge House

Delve into the fun at Ashridge House this half term, an amazing setting for your days of fun-filled adventure. In the heart of the stunning gardens of the estate on the 31st May, watch the story of Robin Hood unfold as the live performance plays out right before your eyes! For those green-fingered among you, just a couple of days before on the 29th, you can get your flora fix at the charity open day and plant fair. Take home your very own piece of nature!
