German Romantics

29th June 2025
Let de Havilland Philharmonic Orchestra transport you to Germany with a repertoire of Brahms, Bruch and Beethoven in their final concert of the season! We open with Johannes Brahms' St Anthony Variations – a theme based on the Joseph Haydn’s St Anthony Chorale followed by 8 variations and a finale. This piece is Brahms’ tribute to Haydn and stands as a testament to Brahms' skill as a composer, demonstrating his ability to create a rich and diverse musical landscape from a single theme. The orchestra is then joined by Brazilian violinist Nathan Amaral to perform Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No.1 in G. Known for its soaring melodies and rich orchestration, it may be the most famous violin concerto ever written and Bruch’s most well-loved piece. Amaral has earned a reputation as a "versatile, charismatic violinist with a natural musical understanding" (Liz Ferschtman), and audiences can expect an impressive solo performance combining both technical brilliance and poignant musical expression. Ludwig van Beethoven's jubilant Seventh Symphony in A major concludes the concert in grand style. Written while Beethoven was taking a break for health reasons in the Bohemian Spa Town of Tepliz, it is characterised by its energetic, dance-like qualities, with a strong rhythmic drive and a feeling of spontaneity. The symphony was so well received at its Vienna premiere in 1813 that the audience demanded an encore of the second movement. We hope you will also enjoy the performance and that we finish our season together on a similar high!
