Water Voles and Wetlands

14th September 2025

Join Lee Valley Regional Park's Conservation Team on a walk to learn all about Water Voles and the wetland habitats where they live.

Water Voles were once common across Britain but have undergone serious decline throughout the last century, due largely to the loss and degradation of their wetland habitats and the spread of the American Mink.

Here in the Lee Valley we still have good populations and this walk will take a tour of one of their strongholds at Silvermeade where you can learn more about these charismatic little mammals and the work that is being carried out to protect them and their habitats. We will search for their telltale signs along the network of ditches and if we're lucky we might even see one, or at least hear the 'plop' when they see us first!

Top tips

•The meeting point for this walk will be opposite the café in the car park

•The site may be wet underfoot in places so we recommend wearing suitable boots or wellies

•Please note that Lee Valley Cattle may be grazing on site

•We would advise that this event is suitable for adults but interested children from 8+ are welcome. All children must be accompanied by an adult

•There is parking at Old Mill and Meadows or nearby at Broxbourne Riverside. For car parking prices, please click here

•There are only 25 spaces on this walk so make sure you book your space early!
