Where is Truth Now? Countering Post-truth, Fake News and Disinformation | Online Talk

5th November 2020

Is truth going out of fashion? No one likes to be lied to, yet ‘fake news’ and disinformation have never been more widespread. Who is spreading all this false information and what impact is it having on the way we tackle major issues like coronavirus, racism or climate change? What can faith communities and individuals do to push back the tide? Tim Bull and Peter Crumpler are your guides for an evening looking at the erosion of Truth in modern society.

Speakers: The Rev'd Peter Crumpler is a former communications director with the Church of England. He trained in journalism and worked in corporate communications in the UK and overseas for an international energy company before becoming communications officer for St Albans diocese and later working at Church House, Westminster. He is the author of ‘Responding to Post-truth’ (Grove Books, 2020) and serves as a self-supporting minister. The Rev'd Dr. Tim Bull is a Canon of St Albans Cathedral and the Director of Ministry for the diocese of St Albans. He has degrees in mathematics from Oxford and theology from Cambridge, as well as two PhDs: one in software engineering and the other in theology. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, a member of the Society of Ordained Scientists and a member of the Church of England’s General Synod. Peter and Tim have been working together on a project, supported by St Albans diocese, looking at Truth in contemporary society, and developing a Christian response to its erosion in public life.

Date and time: Thursday 5 November, 7.30-9pm. Participants will be able to join the event from 7pm.

Price: £10 (£6 for students)

Venue: Online via Zoom. As this talk will be hosted over Zoom, participants will need access to a computer/laptop/tablet/phone which has audio in order to be able to hear. You can also join by dialling in using a telephone, but won't be able to see the speaker or any visual aids.
