Herts locals - eating out just got better. You’ll no doubt have your favourite spots for nights when you want a treat, afternoons that need a quick snack on the go, or times when you want to show off to visiting friends and family, and we’ve got the perfect additions to add to your roster. Locally sourced, consciously crafted, and lovingly made, these sustainable restaurants and cafes in Hertfordshire are bound to become quick favourites on your days, evenings, and nights spent in the county.

Auberge du Lac, Brocket Hall

On the idyllic estate of Brocket Hall, you’ll find the newly re-opened lakeside restaurant Auberge du Lac, boasting a fine menu with sustainability at its core. As you tuck into some exciting dishes (did someone say roast Jerusalem artichoke risotto!?), you can dine in peace knowing that your meal has been grown just metres away from your plate in the rich soil of the estate’s grounds. Kitchen gardener Lucy Hawkins and head chef John Barber have teamed together to make your soil to plate experience as flavourful and nutritious as possible – so browse the menu, pick your favourites, and enjoy!

The Coach House Kitchen

We all know Hatfield Park for its rich history, stunning landscape, and fantastic days out. But, dig a little deeper, and you'll find the Coach House Kitchen - a spot for deliciously seasonal and sustainable dishes. Enjoy a warming meal, put your pinkies up for an afternoon tea, and join in the mission to reduce food waste and find them on Too Good To Go

Lussmanns Sustainable Kitchen

With five spots across the county to choose from, there’s no need to travel far and wide to sample a mouth-watering menu that keeps the planet in mind. At Lussmanns, the clue’s in the same as they bring sustainable dishes to the table for you, friends, and family to dine on, surrounded by a relaxed atmosphere and experts in food and drink. On their list of sustainable accreditations are green energy run restaurants, local sourcing, organic farming, and 100% waste recycling. Need we say more? We’ll see you there…

Acres Restaurant, Ashridge House

With beautiful, sweeping views over the Herts countryside, it makes sense that the team at Ashridge House’s Acres Restaurant are serving up dishes with the planet in mind. Keeping the earth and the people on it happy with delicious, sustainable food, your afternoon can be spent browsing menus inspired by locally grown heritage foods, served up with a modern flourish. Sit back as you soak up the history of the estate, perhaps popping into The Bakehouse for a sweet treat or The Vault for a warming cocktail afterwards.

Tewinbury Farm

Field-to-fork is being done right at Tewinbury Farm, where your next evening out awaits within their bar and restaurant, Cowshed. The 700-acre working farm is the base of all the flavours to be found at Cowshed, with extra inspiration and innovation brought in from fantastic local suppliers and their very own kitchen garden. When dining here, you can expect British classics with a refined touch, all made from the very best ingredients and produce that Herts has to offer.

Vutie Beets

Keep the Veganuary motivation going a little bit longer and head to Vutie Beets in Herts’ very own Garden City of Letchworth. This is one for all you Insta foodies, with the brunches and coffee not only delicious and sustainable, but also picture perfect! So, whether you want fantastically fluffy pancakes, a side of scrumptious scramble, or a beautifully baked breakfast bap, you can get it all vegan and (most importantly) thoughtfully crafted.

The Highwayman

Seasonal favourites are on the menu at The Highwayman, and we can’t quite decide where we want to start! Herb gnocchi, Muskat pumpkin risotto, rustica olives, pistachio souffle…our mouths are watering at the thought of it. Not only will you enjoy an unforgettable meal, but the hidden courtyard garden, weekly quiz nights, and wonderful atmosphere are sure to keep you coming back. Plus, with a three-star Food Made Good rating from The Sustainable Restaurant Association under their belt, your dining experience is good for the planet, too.
